Guyana Seeks ICJ Intervention Amid Escalating Tensions with Venezuela

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo stated that Venezuela is in a weak position due to its aggressive actions and “infantile” remarks toward Guyana. Guyana is pursuing urgent intervention from the International Court of Justice in response to Venezuela’s electoral plans for the disputed Essequibo region, which are viewed as violations of international law. The government is committed to protecting its sovereignty and has support from various international partners.

In a recent press conference, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo asserted that Venezuela finds itself in a precarious position following its escalating actions that threaten regional peace. He emphasized Guyana’s commitment to engaging with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and its international allies to address these issues.

Jagdeo highlighted Venezuela’s breach of a December 2023 ICJ ruling and the Argyle Declaration, specifically concerning its proposal to conduct elections for a disputed region, Essequibo. This election plan, set for May 25, 2025, is viewed by Guyana as a violation of international law and the Court’s directives.

Guyana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed that Venezuela’s electoral intentions could lead to “preparatory acts” negatively impacting both the inhabitants of Essequibo and the nation’s territorial integrity. Consequently, they are seeking urgent intervention from the ICJ to halt Venezuela’s claims and associated activities in Essequibo.

In his remarks, Dr. Jagdeo criticized Venezuelan officials for their derogatory statements aimed at President Dr. Irfaan Ali, labeling them as “infantile.” This comes in light of Venezuelan officials comparing President Ali to Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Guyana has invoked the ICJ for provisional measures for the second time, following a favorable ruling in late 2023 that prevented Venezuela from altering the current territorial situation. The Guyanese government warns that delays in court action could severely harm its sovereignty and the rights of citizens residing in Essequibo.

In conclusion, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo emphasized that Venezuela’s recent provocative actions have prompted Guyana to seek urgent intervention from the ICJ. The Guyanese government remains determined to protect its territorial integrity and maintain support from international partners while expressing concerns about the implications of Venezuela’s planned elections. It is clear that Guyana prioritizes its sovereignty and the welfare of its citizens in Essequibo amid these escalating tensions.
