Empowering SMEs: The Xport Accelerator Programme Enhances Export Readiness for African Trade

The Xport Accelerator Programme conducted a three-day workshop aimed at empowering SMEs to enhance their export potential to Africa through training in key areas such as export strategy, international marketing, and financial risk management. The initiative, organized by MCCI and UNDP, emphasized the significant contribution of SMEs to the Mauritian economy and highlighted the promising opportunities available in African markets under the AfCFTA.

The Xport Accelerator Programme, an initiative designed to enhance the export capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Mauritius, successfully concluded a three-day workshop on October 16, 2024. Organized by the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), this workshop focused on equipping SMEs with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively navigate the African market and seize trade opportunities made available under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). During the event, representatives from 15 selected Mauritian SMEs, alongside three counterparts from Seychelles, participated in a series of intensive training sessions. These sessions addressed essential components of exporting, such as developing effective export strategies, understanding international marketing dynamics, financial risk management, logistics, and compliance with international trade standards. Experts from various institutions, including the Customs Department of the Mauritius Revenue Authority, delivered insights into trade agreements, providing participants with a comprehensive overview of the requirements for exporting to African markets. Mr. Patrice Marie, Vice-President of the MCCI, emphasized the significant role of SMEs in Mauritius’ economy, noting that they contribute approximately 40% of the nation’s GDP and account for 55% of its employment. He stated, “There are nearly 120,000 SMEs actively engaged in various sectors across Mauritius with evident potential for expansion into international markets. The export of services from Mauritius to the African continent is experiencing rapid growth in banking, medical, commercial, and other sectors.” This underscores the potential for SMEs to tap into the growing demand in the African region. Ms. Amanda Serumaga, the UNDP Resident Representative for Mauritius and Seychelles, elaborated on the expansive opportunities for trade within Africa. She remarked, “Africa, with its rich tapestry of cultures, resources, and innovative spirit, is swiftly emerging as a global hub for entrepreneurship, driving innovation and shaping markets. Yet, many entrepreneurs still face significant barriers when it comes to exporting their goods and services.” Her comments highlight the necessity for continued capacity building to empower African entrepreneurs and enhance their export capabilities. The Xport Accelerator Programme is poised to serve as a significant catalyst for Mauritian SMEs, enabling them to broaden their reach into the African market. By offering critical training and facilitating collaboration with industry experts, this initiative is dedicated to fostering an environment conducive to growth and sustainability for SMEs in the region.

The Xport Accelerator Programme was established to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in enhancing their export readiness and capitalizing on trade opportunities within the African market, particularly through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Given the rising significance of Africa as a market for goods and services, initiatives like the Xport Accelerator are crucial in equipping SMEs with the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively compete internationally. With a focus on various important subjects ranging from export strategy to digital marketing, the programme aims to mitigate barriers to exporting and unlock the potential for economic growth in the region.

In conclusion, the Xport Accelerator Programme represents a pivotal step towards enabling Mauritian SMEs to explore and expand into the African market. Through targeted training and expert collaboration, participants are better equipped to navigate the complexities of international trade. Both Mr. Patrice Marie and Ms. Amanda Serumaga articulated the vital role of SMEs in economic development, underscoring the need for continuous support and capacity building to overcome existing barriers and realize the full potential of the African market for entrepreneurship and trade.
