Strengthening Ties: Türkiye’s Commitment to Economic Collaboration and Support for Gaza Reconstruction Efforts

Turkish Ambassador to Cairo, Salih Mutlu Şen, discussed Türkiye’s commitment to expanding its investments in Egypt, particularly in textiles. Concrete plans for ministerial visits and economic collaboration were outlined, alongside Türkiye’s strong stance against displacing Gazans amid ongoing reconstruction efforts. The upcoming centennial celebrations of diplomatic relations promise various cultural events to strengthen ties between the two countries.

The Turkish Ambassador to Cairo, Salih Mutlu Şen, emphasized the active pursuit of expansion and investment opportunities by Turkish companies in Egypt, particularly within the textile sector. During a recent discussion with Daily News Egypt, he highlighted potential areas for collaboration between Türkiye and Egypt, underscoring the importance of trade relations.

In 2024, the two nations have already conducted three significant heads-of-state visits, including President Erdoğan’s bilateral visit and attendance at the D-8 Summit, followed by President Al-Sisi’s visit. Ministerial-level visits are also anticipated, with recent bilateral discussions held by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in Türkiye.

Ambassador Şen expressed optimism that the Turkish Foreign Minister would visit Egypt soon, facilitated by prior successful engagements. These ministerial exchanges aim to advance economic discussions, notably regarding the resumption of Ro-Ro transportation between the two countries, which could significantly enhance trade.

Regarding the displacement of Palestinians, Türkiye maintains a firm stance against any movement of Gazans from their homes, aligning closely with Egypt’s position. Ambassador Şen affirmed that Gazans should remain in their territory, and emphasized that Türkiye supports Egypt’s reconstruction initiatives without displacing residents.

Türkiye is already providing humanitarian aid to Gazans by offering emergency shelter support through container homes and tents. The ambassador expressed confidence in collaborative efforts among Türkiye, Egypt, and various international bodies to facilitate rapid reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.

On economic matters, Türkiye has signed agreements to establish industrial zones in Egypt, with the aim of enhancing its manufacturing capabilities. Companies like Polaris are actively working on projects, including a new zone in the 6th of October City, which is projected to accommodate around 1,000 factories across multiple sectors.

Furthermore, Turkish companies are looking to diversify and expand their presence in sectors beyond textiles, with notable growth in glass and home appliances. For instance, BEKO has initiated production of ovens and refrigerators in Egypt while planning to increase its operational capacity.

The expected trade volume between Egypt and Türkiye is projected to rise by 10-15% this year, with an anticipated addition of $500 million in Turkish investments. The bilateral trade volume was about $8.8 billion last year, with hopes of reaching $10 billion.

In celebration of the centennial of Türkiye-Egypt diplomatic relations, a variety of cultural and sporting events are planned. Highlights include a soccer match between the U-19 national teams and cultural performances by Fire of Anatolia, with additional concerts and exhibitions scheduled to further commemorate this landmark anniversary.

In summary, Türkiye and Egypt are poised to strengthen their bilateral relations through increased economic collaboration and cultural initiatives. The rejection of the displacement of Gazans underscores a shared humanitarian position, while ongoing investments and prospective trade expansions highlight the commitment to economic growth. The planned cultural events will further commemorate a century of diplomatic relations, enhancing mutual understanding and cooperation between the two nations.
