In recent statements, a senior minister from Guyana’s government, Robeson Benn, has expressed serious concerns regarding the presence of Venezuelan “sleepers” within its territory. He indicated that individuals who support Venezuela’s upcoming elections in the disputed Essequibo region may face treason charges. Benn emphasized that anyone appointed to positions such as governor, particularly regarding Essequibo, would be prosecuted, stating that, “…if is a Guyanese who is appointed to be Governor of Essequibo and be place at Anna Regina – we will charge that person for treason and lock them up.”
This proclamation comes after Guyana’s appeal to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to prevent Venezuelan electoral activities in Essequibo. The Foreign Ministry conveyed concerns about the elections scheduled for May 25, asserting that actions within Essequibo could infringe on Guyana’s sovereignty. The press release urged the court to compel Venezuela to cease any such activities.
Venezuela has recently positioned the disputed Essequibo region as part of its national territory following a controversial referendum. This region, rich in resources, hosts over 125,000 of Guyana’s total population of 800,000. Venezuelan plans for the area include elections for a “Governor” and “Legislative Council” under the newly claimed “Guayana Esequiba State,” effectively reaffirming its previous illegal annexation claims.
Currently, both nations are engaged in legal proceedings at the ICJ regarding the validity of an 1899 Arbitral Award that dealt with their land boundary. Guyana filed its case in March 2018, and the Court has asserted its jurisdiction to resolve the dispute.
In a related development, Guyana recently deported 75 Venezuelans, including nine minors, after they arrived without immigration clearance. The Guyana Police Force reported that the individuals were treated humanely before their deportation, receiving essential resources and escorted by the Defence Force Coast Guard to facilitate their return to Venezuela.
Overall, the situation between Guyana and Venezuela remains tense as both prepare for legal action regarding territorial claims. The Guyanese government has taken a firm stance against any external influence in the Essequibo region, warning of severe penalties for those who support Venezuelan electoral activities.
