Nigerian-American Coalition Demands Reinstatement of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan

The NACJD demands the reinstatement of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan after her suspension by the Nigerian Senate for raising sexual harassment claims against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. They criticize the suspension as unjust and threaten international action, including sanctions, if their demands for a fair inquiry are not met within seven days.

The Nigerian American Coalition for Justice and Democracy (NACJD) has called for the instant reinstatement of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was suspended by the Nigerian Senate following her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The organization criticized the suspension as “an outrageous assault on justice, democracy, and the rule of law,” particularly as it coincided with International Women’s Day and reportedly violated a court order.

The NACJD asserted that the suspension indicates a disregard for due process, arguing that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan did not receive a fair hearing regarding her claims against Akpabio, who had stepped back from the proceedings. A representative of the coalition remarked, “This reckless abuse of power cannot and will not go unchallenged,” emphasizing that such actions indicate a preference for protecting influential individuals over ensuring justice and fairness.

The coalition has set a seven-day ultimatum for the senator’s reinstatement and the commencement of a “fair, independent, and transparent hearing” into the allegations. Failure to meet these demands may result in the NACJD pursuing international sanctions against Senator Akpabio and other Senate members, which could include visa bans, asset freezes, and limitations on international interactions.

If their demands remain unresolved, the coalition intends to escalate their concerns to the United States Congress, the United Nations, and various international organizations. “This is not just about one senator—it is about defending democracy, protecting women’s voices, and ensuring that no one is above the law,” they concluded.

The Nigerian American Coalition for Justice and Democracy strongly opposes the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, characterizing it as a significant violation of justice and democratic principles. Their demands for reinstatement and a fair inquiry serve as a crucial stand for women’s rights and due process in Nigeria. The coalition is prepared to seek international sanctions against the Senate leadership should their demands remain unmet, underscoring a broader commitment to uphold democratic values and accountability in governance.
