Sheryl Hermonstine Elected as President of the Athletics Association of Guyana

Sheryl Hermonstine has been elected as the new President of the Athletics Association of Guyana during the delayed Annual General Meeting. She won five votes against Dr. Ariane Mangar’s one, while incumbent President Aubrey Hutson was absent. The newly elected executive includes several key positions to lead the organization amidst governance challenges.

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has welcomed new leadership with the election of Sheryl Hermonstine as President. This change occurred during the delayed Annual General Meeting held on Sunday at the National Racquet Centre in Georgetown. Hermonstine won decisively with five votes, while her opponent, Dr. Ariane Mangar, received one vote.

Some clubs chose to abstain from the voting process, and incumbent Aubrey Hutson, a nominated candidate, was absent during the election. According to the AAG’s constitution, nominees unable to attend must submit a letter expressing their electoral intentions to the Returning Officer. Hermonstine, previously the First Vice President, acted as President during Hutson’s suspension following controversies from the CARIFTA Games in 2023.

In addition to Hermonstine, the new executive comprises Mark Scott as First Vice President, Mayfield Taylor-Trim as Second Vice President, Dwayne Carter as Treasurer, and Niall Stanton as Assistant Treasurer. The Committee Members include Dr. Ariane Mangar, Thelson Williams, Tyrone Smith, Osafo Dos Santos, and Towanna McAlmont. James Cole has been re-appointed as General Secretary, with Kenisha Headley serving as Assistant General Secretary.

The elections occurred amidst several public disputes that underscored the challenges within Track and Field governance. Attorney-at-Law Emily Dodson served as the Returning Officer for the elections.

The Athletics Association of Guyana has elected Sheryl Hermonstine as its new President, alongside a full slate of executive members. This leadership change follows a series of controversies that affected the organization. The newly appointed officials aim to restore stability and confidence in the governance of Track and Field in Guyana.
