On March 17, Lebanese President Michel Aoun directed the military to retaliate after a series of fatal exchanges of gunfire from Syrian territory. The Lebanese Ministry of Health confirmed that the recent violence resulted in seven fatalities and 52 injuries, including that of a young girl aged four.
The armed conflict escalated when the Syrian government accused the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah of infiltrating the border, capturing and killing three Syrian soldiers on Lebanese soil. Hezbollah has denied these allegations, while other reports suggest involvement by local clans engaged in smuggling activities across the border.
