Walikale, home to approximately 15,000 residents, is strategically located about 125 kilometers from Goma, the largest city in eastern DRC, and is now under the control of M23. Consequently, thousands of residents have begun to flee towards neighboring Kisangani in search of safety.

The United Nations has accused Rwanda of supplying support to M23, a claim that the Rwandan government denies. Following a ceasefire appeal from leaders of DRC and Rwanda, direct negotiations were anticipated but M23 withdrew, citing concerns over European Union sanctions. Corneille Nangaa, representing M23, stated firmly, “We will fight until our cause is heard,” indicating the group’s unwillingness to compromise without significant dialogue.
