Super Eagles Aim to Secure World Cup Qualification Against Zimbabwe

The Super Eagles are eager for a win against Zimbabwe in the World Cup qualifiers, hoping to secure nine points. Captain William Troost-Ekong stresses the importance of the match, as Nigeria recently improved their standing with a victory over Rwanda. Zimbabwe seeks to turn their fortunes at the bottom of the group, and fan support is heavily encouraged for the match.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are resolute in their pursuit of victory against Zimbabwe’s Warriors during the 2026 FIFA World Cup African Qualifiers on Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. A win would elevate Nigeria’s points to nine, significantly bolstering their chances for World Cup qualification.

Captain William Troost-Ekong highlighted the match’s significance, reiterating the need for the team to control the game and seize scoring opportunities, akin to their 2-0 triumph against Rwanda. “We are looking forward to a win. The three points are important to us,” Ekong stated, emphasizing their focus on accumulating points in each match.

Nigeria has faced challenges in their qualifying campaign, enduring a winless streak throughout their initial four games, which initially positioned them fifth in Group C. However, their recent victory in Kigali has revitalized their qualification hopes, improving their standing to fourth place with six points.

Currently, Zimbabwe occupies the bottom of Group C with only three points and aims to improve their performance against Nigeria. The Zimbabwe Warriors, led by ZIFA Vice President Kennedy Ndebele, arrived in Uyo for the match, following the Super Eagles’ return from Kigali.

Both teams engaged in training sessions ahead of the match. The Super Eagles practiced in the evening under the observation of prominent football officials, including the NFF Executive Committee members and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi.

FIFA has assigned Eritrean referee Teklu Mogos Tsegay to officiate the match, accompanied by three assistant referees and a fourth official from Eritrea. Ghanaian Prosper Addo will serve as match commissioner, while Burkinabe Paulin Ilboudo will act as the referee assessor.

In Group C, leaders South Africa, with 10 points, will compete against Benin Republic, currently sitting at eight points, while Lesotho and Rwanda will face off as well.

To incentivize the Super Eagles, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has partnered with sponsors to introduce awards. Nigerian Breweries will provide ₦1 million cash prizes for the Man of the Match and Chery Most Valuable Player awards.

Additionally, NFF General Secretary Sanusi has announced that the first 500 fans to purchase tickets for the match will receive a Super Eagles home jersey. He encouraged substantial fan support, echoing the turning out of Rwandan supporters in their last match, and urged Nigerians to fill the stadium in support of their team. Tickets will be available on game day, priced at ₦3,000 for VIP and ₦1,000 for regular seats.

The Super Eagles are determined to secure victory against Zimbabwe, which is crucial for their World Cup qualification hopes. With the support of fans and incentives from sponsors, Nigeria aims to capitalize on their recent momentum and improve their standings in Group C. Continued fan engagement and strategic gameplay will be key elements in this match as they strive to remain competitive in the qualifiers.
