Sudan’s Paramilitary Forces Accuse Army of Airstrikes in North Darfur

The RSF has accused the SAF of airstrikes in North Darfur, causing hundreds of casualties. UN representatives have expressed alarm over civilian attacks. The SAF has outlined controlled areas on a map, highlighting recent military gains amidst ongoing violence. The conflict has severely impacted Sudan, causing widespread death and displacement.

On March 26, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) accused the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) of conducting airstrikes on the Tora market in North Darfur, resulting in over 100 fatalities and numerous injuries. The Sudanese army has refrained from commenting on the accusations, as reported by the Xinhua news agency through the Independent outlet Sudan Tribune.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric expressed grave concern over the ongoing attacks on civilians, referencing both the recent airstrike and an RSF artillery attack on a mosque in Khartoum the previous day.

In a separate development, the SAF released a map delineating the areas under its control and those held by the RSF, amidst the continuous conflict. According to the SAF, their operations, supported by the Sudanese populace, aim to eradicate militias and restore security to the region.

The map indicates regions under complete SAF control, designated in green, which includes Northern, River Nile, Red Sea, Kassala, Gedaref, Blue Nile, Gezira, and Sinnar states. Conversely, RSF territories such as West, South, and East Darfur are marked in red.

Since early 2024, the military has achieved territorial gains, particularly in Omdurman, which has tipped the power dynamics in their favor. Following an escalation in operations, the military regained significant areas in central Khartoum and further advanced in Sinnar State and Gezira State, although several towns remain under RSF control.

As this conflict approaches its two-year anniversary, it has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and over 15 million displaced persons, triggering a severe humanitarian crisis. The disintegration of Sudan’s healthcare system further complicates casualty assessments, leaving figures challenging to verify.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has escalated, as evidenced by the RSF’s accusations against the SAF regarding deadly airstrikes that targeted civilians in North Darfur. The situation has garnered international attention, with concerns regarding the humanitarian impact. The SAF’s recent territorial gains mark a significant development in the conflict, which continues to have severe consequences for the Sudanese population, exacerbating one of the worst crises in recent history.
