The Sudanese Army has regained control of the Libya Market in Omdurman from the Rapid Support Forces; this marks a significant military advancement as part of a broader reclaiming strategy in Khartoum, amid ongoing conflict that has resulted in substantial casualties and displacement.
On Saturday, the Sudanese Army regained control of the “Libya Market” in western Omdurman, marking a significant advancement in its operations within the capital, Khartoum. This control was established after the area had been under the occupation of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since the onset of conflict in April 2023.
This event represents the army’s first successful reoccupation of the Libya Market since the RSF’s initial seizure. A military source who wished to remain anonymous informed Anadolu Agency that the army made significant strides into the market following intense fighting with the RSF.
Sudanese army personnel have released videos showcasing their movements within the Libya Market, a prominent trading hub in the capital. The army’s reclamation of this stronghold facilitates further expansion of their authority over other western sections of Omdurman still controlled by the RSF.
These recent developments follow the army’s successful tactical advances in Khartoum and Bahri, where they claimed control of crucial infrastructure, including the airport and military headquarters. This progress comes after a series of engagements that successfully diminished RSF presence in the region.
The protracted conflict between the Sudanese Army and the RSF, which has persisted since April 2023, has resulted in over 20,000 fatalities and the displacement of nearly 15 million people, according to UN reports. Additionally, studies conducted by American universities estimate the death toll may be as high as 130,000.
Recently, the RSF has seen retreats in various states, particularly around Khartoum and its surroundings. Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF currently maintains control only in isolated pockets, primarily in the western and southern areas of Omdurman, with additional territories in North and West Kordofan and four states in the Darfur region.
The Sudanese Army’s retaking of the Libya Market in Omdurman is a crucial step in its ongoing battle to regain control over Khartoum. This victory illustrates the shifting tide in the conflict between the army and the RSF, which has resulted in significant human loss and mass displacement. As the situation continues to evolve, the army’s efforts to consolidate its position may further impact the dynamics of power in Sudan.
