Sudan Accuses Chad of Supporting RSF in Complaint to African Rights Commission

Sudan has accused Chad of aiding the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) by supplying weapons and mercenaries. Justice Minister Moawia Osman highlighted that evidence has been submitted to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, asserting Chad’s actions involve war crimes. Sudan is prepared to take further legal action against Chad and other countries supporting the RSF.

On November 5, 2024, Sudan lodged a complaint with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), accusing Chad of supplying weapons, ammunition, and mercenaries to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Sudan’s Justice Minister, Moawia Osman, announced that the nation presented substantial evidence against Chad, asserting that such actions warrant reparations. Osman further alleged that Chad’s assistance rendered it culpable for war crimes and crimes against humanity, specifically referencing incidents like the assassination of West Darfur Governor Khamis Abkar in June 2023. He urged Chad to halt all support to the RSF, emphasizing Sudan’s readiness to pursue additional legal avenues against Chad and any other nations that may assist the RSF. The ACHPR received Sudan’s complaint on November 1, and Osman expressed confidence that the commission’s potential condemnation would serve as a deterrent against future aggressions, paving the way for legal recourse on an international scale.

The relationship between Sudan and Chad has been historically complex, often marked by tensions related to border issues and support for various armed groups. The RSF, originally formed to combat insurgencies in Darfur, has faced international scrutiny due to its involvement in alleged war crimes. The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights plays a crucial role in addressing human rights violations and disputes between African nations. This complaint from Sudan underscores the delicate balance of power and accountability within the region, particularly regarding the use of military support across borders.

Sudan’s decision to file a complaint against Chad highlights the ongoing struggles within the region regarding security, human rights, and the responsibilities of nations in conflict situations. By accusing Chad of supporting the RSF and calling for reparations, Sudan seeks to hold Chad accountable for its alleged complicity in war crimes. This action also signifies Sudan’s intention to engage international bodies to seek justice and safeguard its national integrity against external aggression.
